Brand Yourself: Creating a logo

This week it has been workshop week which is where the uni sets up some special classes with one of the teachers or a guest teacher to teach a one off class. I decided to sign up for a class titled ‘Brand Yourself’, where we was given the task of creating a logo to represent us as a designer.

In this class we looked at some logo’s and watched a short clip of an artists creative process creating a small logo for a construction company.

Just before i started my second year of uni I was handed a lot of brilliant, very handy and helpful design books by the window of local well established graphic designer. Among these books is one entitled ‘Letterhead & Logo Design‘, this book was put together by the Top Design Studio based in Los Angeles and it is full of all kinds of Logo’s from large business’s to very small ones.

I thought this book would be a perfect source of inspiration for this task so i flicked through it to find some simple, small logo designs.

These were a few logos i picked out that i really liked, they’re all small, simple, yet they all serve there purpose in a good way.   After looking at a few logos for inspiration i decided to start doodling my own. I decided to go with a minimalist approach and base my logo just around my first initial which is the letter ‘M‘.

These are my rough logo design sketches and I’m very happy with them because i think i explored many various ideas, styles and designs. With many of these designs they were just an experimentation to see what worked and what didn’t. Once i had a good number of rough sketches i decided to take them all into Adobe Illustrator to make them a little bolder and the lines crisper. They’re not all perfect but it was just a quick way to make them clearer . Logo vector 1 Logo vector 2 Logo vector 3

Once i had finished with them all in Illustrator it made it much easier to see which designs stood out, which ones worked and which did not.   These are my final eight designs which i feel were much better than the rest.

I actually really enjoyed this small task and one day i might actually use of of these logos to be used properly.
